Monterey is located on the Monterey Peninsula along the Pacific Coast. The city is approximately 116 miles south of San Francisco and 335 miles north of Los Angeles. The climate is temperate and consistent, with average daytime highs in the summer of 68ºF and average winter daytime highs of about 60ºF. Fog is abundant in the summer.

  • Local hero John Steinbeck used real people and places as models for his 1945 novel, Cannery Row, that detailed the gritty lives and loves of the colorful denizens of the area.

  • Sebastian Vizcaino was the first European to set foot on Monterey Peninsula, on December 19, 1602. He called it "Monterey" after Count de Monte Rey, a viceroy of New Spain.
