Mexico City and Guadalajara
The Plaza of Three Cultures visually sums up what Mexico City is all about with the ruins of an Aztec pyramid, a Spanish colonial church and a modern skyscraper all facing each other. Though it’s the largest metropolis in the world, Mexico City is a city of colonial neighborhoods, lush parks, and vast public plazas that make it easy to explore.

Colonial gem Guadalajara is the nation’s second-largest city and the birthplace of mariachi music. It’s also home to the perhaps the best handicrafts in Mexico. The San Juan de Dios market and nearby Tlaquepaque and Tonala offer an astounding variety of merchandise.

Mexico Travel Tips

  • U.S. citizens will need proof of citizenship and photo identificaiton for entry into Mexico. A passport and visa are not required for a tourist stay of up to 180 days. A tourist card, issued on America West flights serving Mexico, is required. Minors require notarized consent from parent(s) if traveling alone, with one parent, or in someone else's custody.

  • Tap water is not safe to drink in Mexico. Most of the locals don't even drink it. Stick to bottled water. Note that the water and ice cubes served in most restaurants is made from purified water and is generally safe to drink.

  • Use your common sense when dining out to avoid getting a case of Montezuma's revenge. If a restaurant looks unclean or is notably empty during the lunch or dinner hours, avoid it and choose something else. Also watch the hot peppers. If you're not used to them, don't eat excessive amounts as they will upset your stomach.

  • When dining out, a tip of 10% is considered standard. Also note that you will have to ask your waiter to bring you the bill as it's considered rude in Mexico to deliver the check to the diner until he or she asks for it. Just make the motion of signing a check to your waiter to ask for it.

  • Wear loose, light-colored clothing to beat the tropical heat. And be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated before, during, and after recreational activities.

  • A friendly and open attitude goes a long way in Mexico. Practice your Spanish with the locals, even if that only means saying buenos dias ("good morning") or gracias ("thank you").
